Holiday ride

Lastnight was The annual Heritage park holiday ride. I think this was my third year doing it and I believe the most people we have had so far. It was a great night for a ride. It was a little chilly to begin with, but after about a mile or so I started to warm up nicely.

Afterwards we spent the night warming up at the Barley House where they were out of most everything we tried to order. I am not sure if anyone was able to get there first beverage of choice. And how can you not have chili when its 20 degrees outside?? Overall, it was a great night of riding with friends.

Baseline numbers for the first month of training

Tomorrow begins my first month of winter training. I didn't start until January last year and I was reasonable fit come spring, but I know where I want to be and the extra month should do the trick.

Right now I have the next 22 weeks of training planned out. This should have me more prepared than I was last year for both the Barry-Roubaix and Yankee Springs. I will use these two races to determine where I will go training wise at that point.

Tonights data:

(Results based on CTS field test data from PowerTap)

Field Test #1

Cadence Avg. 99
Heart Rate 164
Torque 7.48
Power Avg. 217

Test #2

Cadence Avg. 100
Heart Rate 163
Torque 7.25
Power Avg. 206

I also weighed myself in at 210 lbs today. This number needs to be dropped to at least 190 lbs by my first race. I don't see that as much of a problem just need to get the off-season eating under control.

I will be re-testing in 6 weeks to compare, stay tuned.

Road Ride

Yesterday I got out with Hal, Cam, and Kevin for a nice 40 mile road ride. It isn't often the last weekend of November we get such a beautiful day to ride on so I had to take advantage of it.

It was also the first ride out with the new PowerTap. Watching my numbers while I rode was interesting. When I first started road riding with a group this year I was always told to stay close in the drafts so I didn't have to work as hard. And I definitely found out on a few Tuesday nights what happens if you fall off pace. Now today I actually got to see the difference of being in the draft on my computer.

During the ride I feel off the pace a couple of times and had to work my way back into the pace line. Once in the pace line though I began to notice that at the same mph I was hitting out in the open by myself, when in a group the watts dropped dramatically. I could hold a higher mph average in the group with less energy spent. I know that is the point of staying in the pace line, but it was nice to see how much of a difference it actually makes.

Today off to Fort Custer for some mountain biking. Should be a good time I think we have a pretty big group riding this morning.

Working on next years schedule

This is still a work in progress, but I have laid out some tentative plans for 2010 racing.

Barry-Roubaix 3/27
Stony 6hr 5/15
Lumberjack 100 6/19
Ithaca 6hr 7/17
Pando 6hr 8/14
Hanson Hills 12hr 9/18
Addison 6hr 10/9

Questionable races: Yankee, Fort Custer, Heritage Hare Racer, Hanson Hills XC.

The Roubaix will definitely be the season opener. That race rocked last year and I am looking forward to doing it again. The Stony 6hr is definitely not a solid choice. I don't like the course and can't imagine riding there for 6hrs. I think adding Yankee as an early season race would be better. Plus I really enjoy racing the Fort so by eliminating Stony that makes riding Yankee, Fort, and the Hare Racer more managable. I would really like to do the Hanson Hills XC race, however that is pretty close to Lumberjack and if I am going to attempt this race my time may be better spent on the road.

I don't think I will be adding any other CPS races into the schedule, but you never know. If I do I am thinking about racing them singlespeed, but then I thought if I hit the first two early I could race them as an Expert for the additional mileage which may better prepare me for Lumberjack.

It is entirely possible that my schedule will drastically change, but as of now it should be fairly close to my overall goal.

Finally after 2 months of waiting the overall CPS results

I realized the CPS is staffed by volunteers and it takes time to get the results organzied, but the last race was the end of Sept. and the final results are just now being posted. I am sure there has got to be a better way to tabulate the totals for this series. Ever other race series I followed throughout the year has had their final results posted for some time now.

Oh well, at least the On Two Wheels team had a great showing in their first year:

Sport Men 19-29
Mitch Deyoung 4th place
Brad Potter 5th place

Sport Men 30-34
Jake Pangle 6th place

Sport Men 35-39
Rich Marr 14th place

Sport Women 29 - under
Nichole Baker 1st place
Laurie Deyoung 2nd place

Singlespeed Sport/Beginner
Aaron Osburn 1st place

New Team next year :o) I am off to Arizona

Team RadioShack has released its 2010 roster, which includes 27 riders coming from 16different countries.

“It is a well balanced team,” team director Johan Bruyneel said. “We have experienced riders - with some of them I worked already many years in my former teams – but we also have young talent like Jake Pangle (USA) who will bring a new level of enthusiasm to our team and who can develop in the perfect environment. We expect this young new rider to push Armstrong, Leipheimer, and Kloden during the Tour. His level of riding is unparralled to anyone out there at this point. I am happy that our sponsors want to invest in the future of cycling. Our main goal will be the Tour de France and other stage races but I am confident that, with these riders, we can perform very well in the one-day races as well. I look forward to the new season with Team RadioShack and our first training camp.”

The team also announced it would hold its first training camp next month in Tucson, Arizona.
